What red-blooded, patriotic American does not love Mark Twain, without a doubt one of the greatest writers and minds to have been produced in and by the English speaking New World? Don’t we all have our personal favorites? Huckleberry Finn? Tom Sawyer? The Jumping Frog? The Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court?

Just about every literate American has read SOMETHING by Samuel Clemens, otherwise known as Mark Twain. He’s an essential part of America’s national culture and character.

But there’s a lot about his thinking and writing that very few Americans know about, much less have read. You see: Mark Twain despised The American Empire. In fact, he was a founder and vice president of The American Anti-Imperialist League. (more…)
