Here Comes the “Real” Third Party for 2012: Rand Paul + Dennis Kucinich + Ron Paul + Ralph Nader + Bernie Sanders + Michael Moore + Bill Maher

Third parties have been a very important part of American history.  They’ve arrived at pivotal moments and caused seismic shifts in the politics of their day.  Most Americans don’t realize that the Republican Party started as a third party, united under Lincoln to win the presidential election of 1860. Their victory was a major factor behind the start of The Civil War. They beat the Whigs and Democrats and became a majority party nationally up to The New Deal.

The Populist Party was a serious force in national debate and politics at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th.  Though they didn’t win the presidency, most of their party platform became law through statutes or constitutional amendments within a few years. And Theodore Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party won a large amount of  votes (around 20%) and gave the 1912 election to the Democrats over the Republicans.  In more recent times, Ross Perot managed to set up a nationwide Reform Party in a few months of 1992…and his 19% of the vote cost George W. H. Bush re-election. (more…)

Ron Paul Revere’s Midnight 2011 Ride: The Fascists Are Coming (and They’re Called “Congress”)

Last week, Congress passed a new and depraved version of the totally misnamed and misleading “The Patriot Act.”  Many Democrats and Republicans in the House of Representatives opposed it…but not nearly enough.   Representative Ron Paul (R-Texas), in his remarks to Congress, called it the “Last Nail” in the coffin of what used to be called “The American Republic.” (more…)

BP Update, April 30, 2011 – Gulf of Mexico Disaster: First Annual Awards

Tackiest Public Relations Award:

The Nominees: Barack Obama; BP; The U.S. Coast Guard; EPA; NOAA.

The Winner: BP

BP’s public relations campaign exceeded all expectations of tackiness. By spending more money on PR than in helping the victims of their felonious negligence, they have outdistanced their competitors by a wide margin. Here are a couple of their ads that exemplify their excellence at being so obvious: one to reassure us that BP is doing a great job on the Gulf restoration and the other to make you feel that your soul is invigorated when you drive into their spic and span petrol stations to pay outrageous prices for their gasoline. Green Libertarian Party Update: Nader and Paul Explore Their Common Ground

Ron Paul and Ralph Nader

OK, now I can confess it publicly. Ready? I’m a Green Libertarian. What’s that?

Well, to be honest, Dr. Gus diZerega explains it best in his chapter in my book Quantum Politics (NY: Praeger Publishers 1991). It’s complicated. But it’s philosophically and materially correct. Once you get the common, traditional Newtonian, mechanistic ideas of Ayn Rand and Ludwig von Mises out of the way, Libertarians can be quite reasonable, like Ron Paul (and I hope his son, the junior Senator from Kentucky, Rand Paul).

In an earlier post, a YouTube mock-up of Fox News called MoxNews.com had a very professional interview with Ralph Nader, the 2000 Green Party candidate for president of the United States—Ralph Nader—giving his view on how the Greens (or as he now likes to call them: “the progressives”) are substantially compatible with The Libertarians.

The Third Party That Would Really Change America for the Better: Ralph Nader Sees New Libertarian-Progressive Alliance in 2011-12 Congress

For about 35 years now, I have known that there is a natural alliance between the ideology of the American far right, particularly the Libertarians, and the ideology of the Green Movement in America…which aligns with those who call themselves “progressives.” If only these rather significant political groups could see beyond the confines of their ideology and come together merely on their common ground, they would instantaneously attract the vast majority of the alienated American middle and working classes to their program or “platform.” As for the differences, put them aside for a while.

Ralph Nader Vote Green 2000

Could this actually be happening today? Well, for those of you who don’t know, Ralph Nader—the lifelong opponent of American corporatism–ran for president of the United States in 2000 as the nominee of The U.S. Green Party. He received tens of thousands votes in Florida and there can be little doubt that this was a major factor that caused Al Gore to lose that state and the election to George W. Bush. So, third party politics, once again in American history, showed that it can be a major factor in U.S. elections at the national level.
